Suspected Foot-And-Mouth Case Investigated In Kent

A suspected case of foot-and-mouth disease is being investigated in Kent, it has been confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed that a 3km temporary control zone has been placed around the unnamed farm, which is reported to be in the Romney Marsh area.

This is the first suspected outbreak outside the Surrey area, following the recent outbreak there.

The case is reported to be similar to a case in Dorking in Surrey last week, which eventually turned out to be a false alarm.

Vets were called to the farm last Thursday, following reports that calves were showing signs of a virus, but Defra announced on Saturday that tests on the animals had been negative and the temporary control zone was lifted.

The National Farmers' Union said that it was trying to find out more about the suspected case.

The original outbreak in Surrey is still being investigated and test results on soil from the site of two research laboratories in Pirbright are still awaited.

Last Wednesday, the Health and Safety's preliminary findings suggested that there was a "strong possibility" that the Pirbright Research Centre, which houses both the private company Merial Animal Health and the government-run Institute for Animal Health - was the source of the outbreak.

The first outbreak of the virus was discovered on August 3 at Woolford Farm, near Guilford and this was followed by a second outbreak at another farm, close to where the first outbreak occurred on August 6.
