Latest Foot-And-Mouth Test Results Prove Negative

Initial test results on two suspected cases of foot-and-mouth at a Surrey theme park and a Kent farm have proved to be negative.

Tests were carried out on animals at Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo in Surrey and animals on a farm in Romney Marsh in Kent.

UK Chief Veterinary Officer Debby Reynolds stressed that the results were preliminary, but said that the risk of the virus spreading from around the two infected farms in Surrey and the Pirbright laboratory - the suspected source of the infection - was very low.

The original outbreak in Surrey is still being investigated and test results on soil from the site of two research laboratories in Pirbright are still awaited.

Last week, the Health and Safety's preliminary findings suggested that there was a "strong possibility" that the Pirbright Research Centre, which houses both the private company Merial Animal Health and the government-run Institute for Animal Health - was the source of the outbreak.

The first outbreak of the virus was discovered on August 3 at Woolford Farm, near Guilford, and this was followed by a second outbreak at another farm, close to where the first outbreak occurred, on August 7.
