Foot and Mouth Control Zones Lifted
Two temporary control zones enforced in Kent and Surrey after foot and mouth scares have been lifted.
Tests on two suspected cases of foot-and-mouth at a Surrey theme park and a Kent farm have proved to be negative. Tests had been carried out on animals at Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo in Surrey and animals on a farm in Romney Marsh in Kent.
The lifting of the temporary control zones, combined with no further changes in the disease situation elsewhere means that the vaccination teams will be stood down from their current level of alert, say the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo had alerted Defra, after concerns over one of its sheep.
Meanwhile, another sheep was assessed at the St Merryn meat plant in Merthyr Tydfil.
However, Elin Jones, Rural Affairs Minister for the Welsh Assembly, announced a further easing of FMD movement restrictions to come into effect from midnight, 15 August to address acute animal welfare issues.
Changes include adjustment in the general licence for Wales to allow movement within a holding up to 3 kilometres. Additional conditions and guidance to veterinary inspectors has also been provided to take account of particular processes within the pig industry and the specific licensing for welfare purposes in the area.
Some restrictions on livestock movement in England still remain in force in England.
