Barry George Refused Bail In Dando Appeal Case
Barry George, the man convicted of murdering TV presenter Jill Dando, has been refused bail ahead of his second appeal hearing.
The appeal will be made in November at the Court of Appeal, following a referral by the Criminal Cases Review Commission. However, ruling today, Mr Justice Treacy rejected an application for bail, stating: "I am not persuaded at this stage that this is one of those rare cases where I can take the view that I could order the release on bail because the appeal will be successful."
Jill Dando, 37, was shot dead on the doorstep of her home in Fulham, London in April 1999. George was convicted of the murder in 2001, after forensic evidence found a speck of residue from the gun used to kill the presenter in the pocket of a coat belonging to him. He was found guilty on a majority verdict and given a life sentence.
The Court of Appeal dismissed his first appeal against conviction in July 2002, but in July this year, the Criminal Cases Review Commission referred the case over doubts regarding the firearms discharge evidence used at the original trial.

The Employment Appeal Tribunal has ruled that overtime should be considered when calculating holiday pay. Currently only basic pay is used to calculate holiday, however, the landmark ruling means that any worker who does voluntary overtime could claim for additional holiday pay.

Detectives in Glasgow are continuing enquiries after a woman was indecently assaulted on Saturday in the Govan area. The 37-year-old woman was in a car park at Water Row, just off Govan Road, at around 8.30pm when she noticed a man lying on the ground.

Millionaire property tycoon refused bail
Millionaire businessman Nicholas van Hoogstraten, who was jailed over his part in the murder of a business associate, has been refused bail at the Court of Appeal today. Last year, Van Hoogstraten, 58, who is appealing his conviction for manslaughter, was jailed for 10 years for paying two gunmen to murder Mohammed Raja in July 1999.
