Muggers Dump Teen In Canal

Police in Tameside have appealed for information after a 17-year-old boy who was first mugged, then thrown into a canal.

Sam Sykes was attacked after he left a local pub in Dukinfield to walk home towards Stalybridge, shortly before midnight on Friday.

He walked onto the canal towpath when he saw a group of men in front of him, one of whom asked him for a cigarette. He said that he did not have any and walked past, but then was attacked with a blow to the back of the head, before being punched a number of times.

The offenders then stole a number of items from him, including his wallet and mobile phone, before knocking him unconscious and throwing him into the canal.

Mr Sykes regained consciousness and managed to drag himself out of the water and headed to a nearby pub to raise the alarm.

He was then taken to Tameside General Hospital where he received treatment before being transferred to Manchester North General.

Police said that the offender who asked for a cigarette was white, in his early to mid twenties, about 5ft 8ins tall with short black hair and an oval-shaped face. He was wearing a rugby-type top, black or blue jeans and black gloves.

A second offender is also described as white, 6ft tall and in his early twenties, with a skinny build. He was wearing a white shirt-sleeved T-shirt and dark tracksuit bottoms.

A third offender is described as being 14 or 15 years of age, with a skinny build and a baby face. He was wearing a black tracksuit and was on a bike.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on: 0161 856 9262 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
