Russell Watson Undergoes Brain Surgery

Opera singer Russell Watson is having surgery to remove a brain tumour.

The 40-year-old was admitted to Alexandra Hospital in Cheshire on Wednesday afternoon and it is understood that the surgery was due to begin on Thursday morning.

The star's manager Richard Thompson told reporters that the tumour was a new one which was more aggressive than the one he suffered last year.

Watson underwent an emergency operation to remove a benign tumour at St George's Hospital in south London in September 2006.

He recovered, but was forced to cancel television appearances and postpone a UK tour.

A message on Watson's official web-site confirmed that the singer was in a "critical condition.

Salford-born Watson, known as 'The Voice', rose to fame in 1999 when he performed the UK's national anthem at the rugby cup final at Wembley Stadium, 'Barcelona' at the last match of the Premiership season between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford and a full set of songs at the final of the UEFA Champions League in Barcelona between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

He released his debut album, 'The Voice' in 2001, and has since released four more albums, selling four million albums worldwide.
