'King Of Soho' Dies

Porn magnate and property tycoon Paul Raymond - once dubbed the 'King of Soho' - has died at the age of 82, the Paul Raymond Organisation has confirmed.

Mr Raymond became famous in 1958 when he opened the Raymond Revuebar in Soho - the only venue in the UK to stage live striptease shows.

He later moved into publishing pornographic magazines, including Razzle, Men Only and Mayfair, before moving into the property market and buying large amounts of property in Soho and west London in the 1970s.

Born Geoffrey Anthony Quinn, the son of a Liverpool haulage contractor, in 1925, he left school at the age of 15 and was determined to make his name in show business.

At the age of 22, he changed his name when he received his first break, performing a mind-reading act on Clacton Pier, before becoming a producer and touring Britain with a vaudeville show.

Sometimes referred to as England's answer to Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, Mr Raymond regularly appeared on the Sunday Times' Rich List and is believed to have been worth around £650 million when he died.
