Hotel Balcony Plunge Boy 'Unlawfully Killed'
A six-year-old boy who died in a fall from a hotel balcony in Crete was unlawfully killed, an inquest has ruled.
Liam Hogan, from Bristol, died from severe head injuries after falling from the balcony of the room at the Petra Mare Hotel in Ierapetra in August 2006, along with his father, John, and two-year-old sister Mia. Mr Hogan and Mia suffered broken limbs in the fall, but survived.
Mr Hogan, 33, was cleared of murder during a trial last January. The judge ruled that his mental state made him unaccountable for his actions. He is being monitored in a psychiatric facility in Athens.
Avon Coroner Paul Forrest recorded a verdict of unlawful killing at the inquest in Bristol.
On Wednesday, the inquest heard from an eyewitness - Sarah Davidson - who described hearing a "horrific" row before watching a man push two children from a balcony and jumping himself.
However, Mrs Davidson's husband Ian told the inquest that the man appeared to try and stop the children from falling.
The witnesses were not called to give evidence at Mr Hogan's trial.
Speaking after the verdict today, Liam's mother Natasha Visser, called for Mr Hogan to be prosecuted by British authorities.
