Madeleine Cops Due To Arrive In UK

Portuguese police investigating the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann are due to arrive in the UK today to conduct interviews with friends of the four-year-old's parents.

The detectives will be present at interviews conducted by Leicestershire Police with the seven friends of Gerry and Kate McCann who dined with them on the night of Madeleine's disappearance.

According to reports, three Portuguese officers, including Paulo Rebelo, who took charge of the investigation in October, arrived at East Midlands airport at lunchtime on Monday.

The group, who have been dubbed the 'Tapas 7' by the media, were dining with Madeleine's parents at a tapas bar in the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal on May 3 last year - the night that Madeleine vanished from the family's nearby holiday apartment.

It is understood that the group will be interviewed as witnesses.

The McCanns, from Rothley in Leicestershire, remain formal suspects, or arguidos, in the case. However, it is understood that there are no plans to question the couple at this stage.

Their spokesperson Clarence Mitchell said that the couple were happy to be reinterviewed at any time.

It is understood that the interviews are due to begin tomorrow and should be completed by the end of the week.
