Presenter Wins Damages From Mirror

Strictly Come Dancing star Kate Garraway has won libel damages from two newspapers over stories that implied she had cheated on her husband.

Garraway, 39, took action against Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror publisher MGN at the High Court in February.

The presenter’s solicitor, Rachel Atkins said in court that while Garraway had "worked and spent time together" with dancer Anton Du Beke, she had no choice but to issue proceedings for defamation following publication of the stories despite "denials" prior to the publication of the stories.

The solicitor for Mirror Group Newspapers, Elizabeth Prochaska, said in court: "The defendant did not intend to expressly state that Kate Garraway was having an affair."

The publisher has apologised for "distress and embarrassment caused".

Garraway who is married to Derek Draper is said to be relieved that the situation has been resolved.

She said: "The way my friendship with Anton was twisted into something sordid was terribly unfair and upsetting."

Garraway was the seventh competitor to be voted off the popular BBC series.
