Five Britons Killed In Ecuador Bus Crash

Five British women have been killed in a bus crash in Ecuador.

The women - four gap year students and a tour guide - died when the tour bus they were travelling in collided with a lorry as they travelled from the country's capital, Quito to Puerto Lopez, a fishing village on the coast on Saturday.

The women killed in the crash have been named as Indira Swann, 18, from Berkshire; Elizabeth Pincock, 19, from Somerset; Rebecca Logie, 19, from Lancashire; Emily Sadler, 19, from Hertfordshire; and Sarah Howard, 26, a travel guide from Cheshire.

Twelve other Britons, a French national and two Ecuadorians were also injured in the crash. Their injuries are believed to include whiplash and minor facial and leg injuries.

It has been reported that the lorry driver fled the scene, following the collision.

The group were taking part in a trip organised by gap year travel specialists VentureCo. The trip, which began last month, involved language tuition and working on a series of volunteer projects and the group had been on their way to Puerto Lopez to take part in a project building sanitation and renovating a children's crèche when the tragic crash occurred.

The survivors of the crash are being treated in hospital in Quito and it is understood that preparations are being made to have them flown home.

Ecuadorian authorities have launched an investigation into the crash. British diplomats are reported to be helping with the inquiry.
