Pc Shot 'Pretending To Be A Criminal'
A police officer who was shot dead during a training exercise in Manchester was playing the role of a criminal, it has been revealed.
Thirty-two-year old Pc Ian Terry suffered a gunshot wound to the chest after being shot by a colleague during a drill to practise apprehending fleeing armed criminals.
The incident occurred at 11.35am yesterday at the site of a former electronics factory on Thorpe Road in Newton Heath.
Pc Terry, from Burnley, Lancashire, was admitted to North Manchester Hospital where he later died.
Acting Chief Constable, Dave Whatton said: "This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Ian's family and friends. He was a well respected officer and will be sadly missed."
A statement released by the Association of Chief Police Officers said: "Firearms training for UK police officers is among the best in the world and includes common minimum standards for all forces in firearms training. Whilst any unintentional discharge is a cause for concern, training and debriefing and a review of procedures take place to ensure such unfortunate incidents are kept to an absolute minimum."
Pc Terry's family have requested that that the media respect their request for privacy.
An Independent Police Complaints Commission spokesperson said that officers were using "special munitions" designed to stop vehicles.
Police and the IPCC have not identified the type of bullet that killed Pc Terry.
The IPCC is investigating the incident.
Pc Terry became a firearms officer with Greater Manchester Police in 2002 after joining the police force in 1997.

MoJ Reveal Drone Used In Prison Smuggle Attempt
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has revealed that a drone was used to try and smuggle a package into the grounds of HMP Bedford. An MoJ spokesperson said that the aircraft was "quickly intercepted by vigilant staff" on 06 March.

PC Ian Dibell Posthumously Wins Bravery Award
A national police bravery award has been posthumously awarded to PC Ian Dibell (41), who was killed when he tackled a gunman in the street near his home. Mr Dibell died while trying to disarm Peter Reeve, who had opened fire on a couple in Clacton, Essex, in July last year.
