Teenager Dies In Sand Tunnel Collapse

A teenager has died after a beach game turned to tragedy and a tunnel constructed in sand dunes collapsed around him.

Emergency crews tried to resuscitate the boy after he was pulled out of the sand at Cefn Sidan beach, near Burry Port in Carmarthenshire, on Sunday evening.

The boy from Wrexham, in north Wales, had been on holiday with his family and friends when the accident happened.

It is understood he had been playing with a group of up to 15 other children in the dunes behind the beach when he became trapped.

Burry Port Coastguard Rescue Team, an air ambulance, and officers from South Wales Fire Service and Dyfed-Powys Police attended the scene.

A Mid and West Wales Fire Service spokeswoman said three fire engines including one carrying specialist equipment attended the scene to help with the rescue.

The victim was airlifted to Morriston Hospital, in Swansea, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

It is understood the boy had been trapped in the sand for about 20 minutes.

Dave Huges, Watch Manager at Swansea Coastguard, has extended his sympathy to the boys' family and said "it's just a tragic accident that could have been prevented".

"Because we've had a lot of rainfall over the last couple of days, the sand becomes quite compact and obviously it becomes very dense as well.

"With school holidays in full swing we want to warn families to be aware of the dangers of tunnelling in sand," he said.

The boy's name will not be released until his immediate family have been informed.
