Boa Constrictor On The Loose In Kent
Kent residents are being told to be extra vigilant following the escape of a pet boa constrictor.
The 6ft snake, which is brown with distinctive black markings was reported missing on Monday afternoon after escaping from its home in St Mary's Island, Chatham on Sunday night.
Kent Police think that the reptile could be searching for somewhere warm and damp to hide, as it will be sleepy, having been fed before it disappeared.
People have been urged to contact the police if they see the snake.
Inspector Dave Coleman said that advice from zoos is being sought, "particularly how the public should respond to sightings".
"Keep windows and doors closed, and small animals in the house if possible.
"Do not attempt to touch it or pick it up by the tail as these snakes do bite," he said.
However, Boa constrictors are non-venomous snakes. Thye are usually found in central, and south America.
They can survive for up to 30 years in captivity, living on mice, rats and chicks.
The snake can go for six months between meals and are known to kill their prey by squeezing them to death.
The greatest recorded length of a specimen was in Trinidad, reaching some 18.5 feet.

Man Dies In London Blaze
A man has died following a blaze at a block of flats in south-east London. Firefighters found the man collapsed on the fourth floor of the seven floor building at 11.30pm on Tuesday. London Fire Brigage (LFB) said that three engines and around 15 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire at the building in Steadman Street, Walworth, Southwark.

‘Piano Man’ returns home to Germany
The mysterious ‘Piano Man’ has been identified and has been discharged from hospital, it has emerged. West Kent NHS and Social Care Trust, which had been caring for the man since April, confirmed that he had been discharged from their care following a “marked improvement” in his condition.

Man Arrested Over Kent Doctor's Murder
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a doctor in Kent. Consultant paediatrician Dr Victoria Anyetei, 54, was found in her car in the driveway of her home in Dartford on August 14. She had been stabbed to death. Kent Police said that the man was arrested on suspicion of murder at an address in Dartford.

Emergency services are continuing to search the River Kent, after a car reportedly entered the water on Monday afternoon. It is understood that a vehicle has been sighted in the river but water levels are still high.
