Inquest Hears 'Death' Dog Was Not Walked

An inquest has heard that a dog which mauled a 13-month-old baby to death had not been walked in five months.

The 13-month-old boy was mauled to death by the rottweiler in an unexpected attack on December 28 last year.

Archie-Lee was spending Christmas at his grandparents' house in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

His 16-year-old aunt was baby-sitting him and her two younger sisters, aged six and seven.

It is reported that he was being carried by the seven-year-old when the dog, who was used to children, snatched the child out of her arms.

His aunt was unable to rescue the baby from the rottweiler's jaws and Archie-Lee later died in hospital from multiple injuries.

The two-and-a-half year old dog was later destroyed by police.

David Hinchliff recorded a verdict of "accidental death" and has called for stricter controls on the breeding and sale of dangerous dogs.

Meanwhile, a canine consultant, said the Rottweiler did not have enough "mental stimulation" in the back yard where she was kept and not taken out for exercise.

The inquest also heard that Archie-Lee's grandparents had bought the puppy from a person they knew in a pub just six before the fatal attack. The puppy had come from an unregistered breeder.

Mourners released dozens of pale blue balloons at the youngster's funeral led by his parents Rebecca Hirst, then 18, and Damian Williamson, 20.

In a tribute, his mother said her son was a "sleeping angel".

In January, West Yorkshire Police said no charges would be brought over the death as there was "insufficient evidence" to secure a criminal conviction.
