Festival Fire Started 'Accidentally'

A huge fire at Reading Festival was started accidentally, police say.

It is understood the blaze was caused by a barbeque.

The alarm was raised at 4pm on Saturday when music fans saw smoke billowing into the air.

A fire brigade spokesman said the fire was under control within an hour and no-one was injured.

Showbiz Spy reported that Pete Doherty alerted authorities to the blaze. The singer had been due to play a gig with his band Babyshambles when he reportedly spotted the smoke.

NME said that one fire rescue team, which was answering the call did not make it to the site as it got stuck in the mud on a campsite walkway.

Nineteen cars were damaged in the blaze.

On Sunday, a second fire started after a campfire got out of hand but no festival-goers were hurt.

Firefighters dealt with the blaze before it could spread significantly or cause much damage to property, a brigade spokesman said.

The three-day festival, which began on Friday, attracted thousands of people and Thames Valley Police recorded 226 offences and made 45 arrests in total.

Rage Against the Machine, The Killers and Metallica headlined at the festival, which is one of the world's oldest popular music festivals.
