Three Children Hurt in Pony Trap Crash

Three children have been badly injured after a car crashed into their pony trap.

The cart being driven by a 13-year-old boy near Sherburn Stone Quarry, close to Durham, was hit from behind on the B1283. The children fell onto the road.

The boy and a 13 year-old passenger both suffered a broken collar bone and concussion, while a 12-year-old passenger broke a leg. The children are being treated in the University Hospital of North Durham.

A Durham Police spokesman said the children were knocked to the ground when the car collided with the trap. No-one in the car was injured but the trap was extensively damaged.

The road was closed for three hours.
