Children To Be Kept Safe Online
Some of the biggest names from industry and charities have joined forces with the Government, parents and young people to help keep children safe online, Children's Secretary Ed Balls and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced today.
The new UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) will unite over 100 organisations from the public and private sector working with Government to deliver recommendations from Dr Tanya Byron's report 'Safer Children in a Digital World'.
Reporting directly to the Prime Minister, the Council will help to improve the regulation and education around internet use, tackling problems around online bullying, safer search features, and violent video games.
Speaking at the launch of the UKCCIS at the Science Museum in London, Mr Balls said: "Today's launch is a significant achievement and I thank all members of the Council for their support and commitment. We want to help children and young people to make the most of what all digital and interactive technologies can offer. By putting in place the right support for children, young people and parents we can reduce much of the anxiety that exists around the internet. UKCISS will enable everyone from parents to industry, Government, education, and children’s welfare organisations to play their part in keeping children safe online."

A new campaign to help parents deal with "sexting" has been launched by the National Crime Agency's Child Exploitation & Online Protection Centre (CEOP). The campaign hopes to address issues arising from young people sending self-taken nude or nearly nude images and videos using their mobile phones, commonly known as 'sexting'.

The Home Office has announced new measures to protect children from being 'groomed' by internet paedophiles. As part of the plans new Centre for Child Protection on the Internet will be set up to provide support for the police and child protection agencies.

New internet safety advice to target children online
New internet advertising which targets children with safety advice when they are online has been unveiled by the government today. The new campaign of radio and online adverts, launched to coincide with Parents Online Week, is designed to encourage children to think twice about whom they might be communicating with in chat rooms.

Environmental awareness at colleges given green light
Green action plans for schools, colleges and universities will encourage them to care for the environment, Education Secretary Charles Clarke said today. They make up more than 5% of all buildings in the UK, he said, so it is vital that they use their resources in efficient and responsible way.

Funeral Held For Mary Shipstone, Aged 7
The funeral has taken place of seven-year-old Mary Shipstone, who was murdered by her father at her home in Northiam, Sussex. The child was buried in a private service at St Mary's Church in the village.
