Police Presence At Funeral Of Suicide Teenager 'Urged To Jump'

There will be a strong police presence at the funeral of a Derby teenager who was taunted to jump 60ft from the top level of a shopping centre car park.

Police have said unwelcome guests will be asked to leave the funeral of Shaun Dykes who fell to his death from the car park at the Westfield Shopping Centre on 28 September, 2008.

As police negotiators tried to coax the 17-year-old down over a three hour period, a crowd of up to 300 people gathered with some members shouting jeers of "Go on then, jump" and "How far can you bounce?"

There has been widespread outrage at the actions of the crowd. Mick Creedon, the chief constable of Derbyshire Constabulary, described the behaviour as "totally abhorrent".

A Police spokeswoman said: "I can confirm that the family have asked for the media to stay away from all parts of the funeral and wake.

"They have requested that they should be left to mourn in peace.

"There will be a police presence and (unwelcome guests) will be asked to leave."

The funeral will take place on Monday 13 at the Baptist Chapel in Derbyshire.

Many pupils and teachers of Heanor Gate Science College, were Shaun was studying for his A-levels in maths, business studies and politics, are to attend.

Fellow Heanor Gate student Josh Barlow said: "He was the lad that always had a smile on his face and was such fun to be with. It is a tragic loss."
