Chef Prepared Kebab As Dead Worker Lay Nearby

A fast food shop has been shut down after the owner was found preparing food while the corpse of an employee lay nearby.

Jaswinder Singh, 45, of Prosser Street, Park Village, Wolverhampton was cooking opposite the corpse of a recently deceased employee at the Pappu Sweet Centre.

A police officer who came to investigate the death of the man found Singh cooking next to the dead worker. He immediately closed down the premises.

A statement of facts, read out in court said: "Upon his arrival the officer observed a dead male lying on a sofa at the rear of the main kitchen.

"Sat opposite to him was Mr Singh who was preparing food, making kebabs."

The Council described it as one of the worst cases environmental health officer had seen.

The court heard a dead rat had been found under a cooking pot and rat droppings were discovered during a health inspection at the Cannock Road business.

There was also an "awful smell" and thawing meat which was oozing blood and covered in flies.

The report also found staff smoking and spitting on the floor and refrigerators whose temperatures were over 20C.

District Judge Martin Brown said: "The facts in this case are extraordinarily serious. They are about as grave as one might get in such a case.

"This all says to me unequivocally that you are not a fit person to be preparing food for business. I have effectively taken away your business."

Singh was previously fined £2,000 in 2001 for poor hygiene. Speaking through an interpreter he said: "I am sorry for this, but I have spent £2,000 repairing it.

"I should be given one last chance. I would do whatever they told me to."

The 45-year-old has been banned from managing any food businesses and ordered to pay £3,861 in fines and costs, after admitting 12 food hygiene charges.
