He published a consultation taking forward key findings from the Gallagher Review, including the proposal that the rate of increase of the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) be slowed to reach 5% in 2013-14 rather than in 2010-11. At the same time he dedicated a further £6 million to research being conducted by the Carbon Trust to accelerate the development of advanced sustainable biofuels technologies.
First Steel Erected On Olympic Stadium
The first steel has been erected on the Olympic Stadium reaching 35 metres above the ground and creating a visible landmark for miles around the Olympic Park. Steel terracing supports, each weighing 35 tonnes, are being lifted into place above the podium level to hold the 55,000 seats in the upper tiers. Work has begun this week on the south stand and 112 of these rakers will be erected around the Stadium podium over the next nine months. These 40 metre long steel rakers have been fabricated in a factory in Bolton and are being delivered to site in sections, to be bolted together and lifted into place by a 200 tonne crawler crane. Work started last month on the 200 concrete rakers and 12,000 pre-cast concrete terracing units for the lower bowl which holds the 25,000 permanent seats within the Stadium.
Vandals Cause £100K Damage To West Lothian Bridge
Police are appealing for witnesses after vandals smashed a 20ft wall along the edge of a West Lothian footbridge which is over a century old. Over £100,000 worth of damage was caused by the vandals using sledgehammers between 1pm and 3pm on Monday. The bridge near the Lanthorn Centre in Dedridge will be closed for some considerable time while repairs are carried out. Alan Scott, a Lothian and Borders Police spokesman, said: "This is a wanton mindless act of vandalism to an historic icon in this part of the town. "An estimated cost of up to £10,000 to repair the bridge has been quoted. We would appeal to anyone who knows who is responsible for the vandalism to contact the police."
