Hamilton Takes World Title In Dramatic GP Finish

Lewis Hamilton has become the youngest ever world champion in Formula One history following a dramatic finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old McLaren Mercedes driver managed to take the fifth place position he needed to win the title, at the last corner.

Hamilton, who dropped to sixth place after a late-race rain shower saw him stop for wet tyres, managed to pass fourth-placed Timo Glock, who made a mistake on the final corner in the wet conditions.

Felipe Massa - who thought he had done enough to secure the title - won the race, with Fernando Alonso in second and last year's world champion, Ferrari-driver Kimi Raikkonen in third.

Hamilton clinched the championship by one point.

"It's pretty impossible to put into words," Hamilton told reporters yesterday. "It has been such a long journey, but with a lot of support from people back home.

"My team did a fantastic job all year, making a lot of sacrifices, and I'm so thrilled I've been able to do this for everyone."

Massa, who has won six grands prix this year - one more than Hamilton - was emotional at the finish.

The Brazilian said: "I don't cry a lot, but today it was difficult not to. Perhaps it's my age. I had really mixed emotions, racing at home here in front of the Brazilian people."

He also said the season was one of "highs and lows" adding: "I can leave Interlagos with my head held high."
