Man Injured In Armed Raid

A man has been attacked and robbed in his Glasgow home by a gang of four men. According to police, the robbers, one of whom had a firearm, ransacked the house in the Shawlands area of the city before they fled with a five-figure sum of money. The 38-year-old victim was threatened by the men after opening the door of his Hector Road home at about 2.30pm. Police said the man was in a stable condition in hospital after suffering a head injury in the attack.

£66m Boost For Local Roads In England

An extra £66m to improve local roads in England was announced by Transport Minister Paul Clark today. The funding - which is in addition to the £2.1bn already provided for highways maintenance - will allow councils to make improvements to important local roads, bringing benefits to local people and businesses. Transport Minister Paul Clark said: "High quality local road networks are vital to communities; connecting people with work, shops, services, families and friends. This additional funding will allow local authorities to carry out improvements to important local highways bringing benefits to all who use the roads."

Troops Work Up An Appetite For New Rations

Traditional biscuits, brown and corned beef hash are to be replaced with new products in ration packs distributed to front-line troops this summer. Over 300,000 of the new 24-hour Multi-Climate Rations (MCR) will roll off Vestey Food's UK production line to be trialled by deployed troops. They will feast on more suitable pasta lunchtime pouches, cookies and energy bars that replace some of the more traditional components of ration packs. The MCR trial will also include the introduction of 20 new menus for general use, plus six new menus for vegetarian, Halal, and Sikh/Hindu dietary requirements.

Interim Chief Executive Takes Over At Criminal Records Bureau

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) today announced Steve Long has been appointed as its interim chief executive. The CRB was established in March 2002 to provide information to employers to help identify candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involving children or vulnerable adults. Based in Liverpool, the CRB uses police records and lists of those barred from working with children and vulnerable adults to help employers make recruitment decisions. During the past four years it has prevented more than 80,000 unsuitable people from gaining access to children or the vulnerable.

Plans Announced To Make Young People Work For Benefits
The Prime Minister has announced a proposal for 18 to 21-year-olds claiming benefits to do daily work experience. The proposed reform, known as Community Work Programme, would see young people not in work, education or training, required to complete daily work experience, alongside continuing to look for work in order to qualify for benefits.

'Armed Siege' Ongoing In Glasgow
Armed police have responded to an "ongoing incident" in Boyd Street in Glasgow. Police Scotland confirmed that officers armed with guns and shields had been called to a property in the city's Govanhill area at about 11:20 on Monday. According to the BBC, police have told local people the incident is an "armed siege".

Police appeal over teenager's rape
Merseyside Police are appealing for witnesses following the rape of a 16-year-old girl on Saturday. The girl was walking home between 9:30pm and 10pm when she was approached by a man who forced her to waste ground behind St Dunstan Church on Earle Road in Wavertree. The attacker is described as white, aged around 18 or 19 and of slim build.
