Eight Feared Dead As Helicopter Ditches In Sea
At least eight people are feared dead after a helicopter ditched into the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.
The Bond Super Puma aircraft was returning from an oil platform just before 2pm when it went down 35 miles from Aberdeenshire.
At least 16 people were thought to be onboard. According to Sky news sources, eight bodies have been recovered and the search continues for the other eight.
Aberdeen Coastguard said a major rescue operation was underway.
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) spokesman said: "A supply vessel called Normand Aurora, which was quite close by, has put their fast response boat into the water and is looking for survivors."
The statement continued: "Two helicopters from the RAF have been scrambled to the scene and a Nimrod marine patrol aircraft has been diverted to the sea.
"Aberdeen Coastguard have begun broadcasting a mayday signal into the area. RNLI lifeboats from Peterhead and Fraserburgh are heading for the scene now.
"It is understood that there are 16 people on board the aircraft".
A spokeswoman for BAA Aberdeen said it was understood the helicopter had issued a mayday near Peterhead then ditched into the water.
The incident comes just six weeks after a Bond Super Puma with 18 people on board ditched in the North Sea in February.
All those on board survived the crash on 18 February.

Staff Taken Off North Sea Oil Platform
Workers are being evacuated from a North Sea oil platform after hydrocarbons were detected in one of its legs, it has been announced. The incident is at Taqa Bratani's Cormorant Alpha platform, which is about 94 miles off Shetland. It is understood there are 159 people on board and all are said to be safe and well.

63-Year-Old Dies In Sailing Accident
Dyfed-Powys Police have reported the death of a 63-year-old man in a sailing accident off the Pembrokeshire coast. According to police, the man was with two others in a dinghy that capsized at about 18:35 on Wednesday at Newport beach.

RAF Hercules Airlifts Premature Newborn Twins
Twins born prematurely have been airlifted by an RAF Hercules aircraft from the Outer Hebrides to a hospital on the Scottish mainland, in an emergency rescue operation. The mother of the babies went into labour at 27 weeks and gave birth in hospital in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis on Sunday.

Workers Stranded On North Sea Rig
Over 90 workers have been stranded on a gas rig in the North Sea since Monday after a helicopter broke down. The workers have been stranded for two days on the Ensco 80 rig, located 100 miles off the Norfolk coast. 94 people are said to be on the rig, amounting to four times over its capacity.
