Met Detective Guilty Over 'Obscene' Football Chants
A Metropolitan Police detective is facing the sack after admitting chanting obscene songs on a train following a Bristol City match.
James Coleman, 27, pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour for being among a group of Bristol City football fans who were singing offensive songs on their way to a game against Charlton in south east London.
City of London Commissioner Mike Bowron, who was also on the train, produced his warrant card and asked the group to tone down their language.
However, he was subjected to further abuse, and, according to legal sources, the 51-year-old said he feared the crowd would have assaulted him.
Coleman appeared before Westminster magistrates and pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour.
CCTV images from the 6.30pm Charing Cross to Dartford service last October were circulated in Bristol and in London.
They led to Coleman - then a detective constable serving in Hounslow, west London - being identified.
He was later charged with disorderly behaviour, causing harassment, alarm and distress and pleaded guilty last month, ahead of the trial scheduled for May 19.
He was handed a £300 fine and ordered to pay £100 costs.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman also confirmed Coleman is on restricted duties pending the outcome of internal disciplinary proceedings.
