England Fan Shot Ahead Of Qualifier

An England football fan has been shot and wounded in the build up to the World Cup qualifying match against Kazakhstan.

The Foreign Office confirmed the supporter was shot in the leg in a bar in the neighbouring Kyrgyzstan.

The incident is said to have taken place in the country's capital of Bishkek after a local apparently took exception to the chanting of him and his friends.

"We can confirm that a British citizen was shot in the leg in a bar in Bishkek," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said.

"The British honorary consul is liaising with those involved and with the local authorities."

Reports from The Sun newspaper state the victim was a 30-year-old man from Rochdale, Lancashire, and he is now back with friends after discharging himself from hospital, where the bullet was removed.
