Rantzen To Stand 'At Next General Election'
Television presenter Esther Rantzen has announced she is to stand for election as MP for Luton South at the next general election.
Labour’s Margaret Moran, the current MP for the area, is to stand down after it was revealed she claimed £22,500 for treating dry rot at her Southampton home - which is 100 miles away from London.
Former That's Life presenter Mrs Rantzen said she had been considering standing for election since the Daily Telegraph published a series of stories regarding MPs' expenses.
She added that the welcome she received in Luton South "impelled by the rage many others were feeling at the time" regarding the expenses, had convinced her to stand.
Speaking to the Press Association she said: "This is an exciting and slightly petrifying next step for me.
"There is a feeling in the air that people want a choice."
She added: "We are feeling, all of us, angry and distressed about the expenses scandal."
The TV presenter said she has decided to stand as an independent despite warnings from political experts that there is "no chance" of victory.
