McDonnell elected SDLP deputy leader
Dr Alasdair McDonnell is the SDLP's new deputy leader, it was announced yesterday.
Dr McDonnell beat Alban Maginnis and John Dallat to the position following a vote at the party's annual conference in Belfast on Sunday.
The 54-year-old south Belfast MLA succeeds Brid Rodgers who is stepping down.
Commenting on his success, he said: "I confronted the members with the problems we had in the party and they responded.
"I told them if they wanted me to try and tackle the problems, they could elect me.
"If they were half hearted about tackling the problems, they shouldn't bother voting for me. They voted for me."
Dr McDonnell confirmed that he would now be withdrawing as a candidate to succeed John Hume as an MEP.

Home Safety And Crime Prevention Event At Belfast City Hall
A free home safety and crime prevention advice event is to be held at Belfast City Hall on Friday, 01 March. The Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) has organised the event, which is free and will take place from 10am-1pm in Belfast City Hall. Complimentary tea, coffee and refreshments will also be provided.

BCC Welcomes Conviction Of Belfast Man For Dog Attack
Belfast City Council (BCC) has welcomed the conviction of a man at Belfast Magistrates Court for an offence involving a dog attack on a woman. BCC brought the prosecution against 43-year-old Stuart Grace, of Forthriver Crescent, Belfast, following a report that Mr Grace’s German Shepherd dog had attacked a woman, injuring her arm and back.
