£1.5m Banbridge makeover gets official opening

A £1.5 million environmental improvement scheme that has helped to transform the appearance of Banbridge was officially opened today by Minister for Social Development, John Spellar.

The investment included the realignment and repaving of footpaths and parking lay-bys, improvements to the central reservation area, planting of trees and the provision of new street furniture in Newry Street, Bridge Street and Church Square.

Speaking at an event to mark the scheme’s completion, Mr Spellar said: “This initiative has dramatically improved the visual appearance of Banbridge and marks a significant step in implementing the town’s regeneration strategy.

“It has given Banbridge a major boost, creating a vibrant environment that is encouraging further investment and helping to promote the town as a major shopping destination.

The Department for Social Development recently opened an office located in the Banbridge Business Centre at Scarva Rd which will deal with Town and City Centre Re-invigoration and Neighbourhood Renewal for the area stretching from Dromore to Newry and from Craigavon to Newcastle.
