Bus Blaze Condemned

As the police launched an appeal for information after four buses were destroyed in a weekend arson attack in Newtownabbey, a local politician has called for crisis meeting.

Alderman Nigel Hamilton also condemned the criminal damage, which he said caused £200,000 of damage in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The impact of this destruction will have implications on commuters who rely heavily upon the blue bus service in the Newtownabbey area.

"Those who carry out this wanton destruction are a blight on our community they wreck and ruin and we are left to pick up the pieces and pay the price of their rampage.

"I am demanding immediate action from the police and council, after having visited the depot to see it for myself what has been done by these criminals.

"I will be calling upon our District Policing Partnership to set up a meeting with senior Translink staff, PSNI Commander Paula Hillman and the Council's Chief Executive to discuss options on a way forward which will put an end to this," the DUP man said.

The police revealed that two other buses were damaged in the attack and that a tyre storage building was also destroyed at the bus depot on the Glenville Road.

"The alarm was raised at around 5am on Sunday morning," a statement said.

"Police and Fire Service investigators have been examining the scene in an effort to establish the cause of the blaze which is being treated a suspicious."

The police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Newtownabbey on 0845 600 8000.
