Windows XP launched despite economic climate

US software giant Microsoft has launched the latest version of its Windows product, XP.

With a marketing campaign worth $250 million, the XP is believed to be the biggest advance in Microsoft’s product portfolio since the launch of the Windows 95.

The new operating system is said to offer improved reliability and built-in multimedia functions. It will also feature an unprecedented number of applications, such as a web browser, an e-mail program and instant messenger.

But, aside from fears over the recent downturn in world economic fortunes, there are concerns that consumers may prove reluctant to adopt XP, given that many will need to buy a new computer to use it.

However, computer manufacturers hope Windows XP will give the ailing PC industry a much needed boost as global shipments of PCs have tumbled by over 10 per cent in the third quarter, its first decline since 1986, according to recent figures. (MB)
