Jobs Boost As Sisk Lands Contract

Jobs are to be protected and new ones created as John Sisk & Son the Irish construction company after landed the biggest construction contract in the last two years – a joint bid for Crossrail's £550m tunnelling project.

Sisk said it is is now number 8 in the top 50 contractors in Great Britain for financial performance over the last 12 months (Jan – Dec 2010), for winning 20 deals worth £1,1101,7bn after Sisk had joined with Spanish construction giant Dragados to tender for Crossrail's largest contract to date.

The win means both companies are together ranking joint second in the top 50 contractors for December.

Its Belfast team has also been working on the new manufacturing building for the Bombardier CSeries aircraft this year and has completed projects for Belfast Harbour Commissioners, Armagh City Council, Seagate Technologies and Straben Development’s Adelaide House in the last three years.

Mark Bark, Business Development Executive for Sisk NI, said: "Sisk has continued to deliver a strong financial performance, despite a challenging year for the construction industry in the domestic market, by seeking new markets and by joining forces with key allies as and when appropriate."

Ireland's Largest Construction Firm Lays Off 300
The Sisk Group, the larget construction firm in Ireland has laid off more than 10% of its staff this year. The Group Chief Executive, Liam Nagle, said around 300 of its 2,900 workers had been made redundant on a phased basis from the business.

Crossrail Engineering Project Given Green Light
Work on the largest civil engineering project in Europe is to get under way shortly. Crossrail, the largest addition to the transport network in London and the South East for more than 50 years, has completed its Parliamentary process, with the Crossrail Bill receiving Royal Assent last night.

Construction of a €400m Board Gais power plant has got underway in Cork - promising to generate over 600 building jobs. The Whitegate plant project is expected to be complete by June 2010, and will power around half a million homes.

'Window Of Opportunity' As Camden Recruits
The door to expansion has been flung open with a major investment in a construction sector business specialising in doors and windows. The Stormont Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said that the £16m boost for a manufacturer of PVC doors, windows, conservatories and glass sealed units will create 225 new jobs over the next three years.

Jobs Boost For Clare & Donegal
Two different companies in Clare and Donegal have announced a total of 170 new jobs. Some 90 new jobs will be created over the next three years in Lissycasey at the Clare Spring Water company, while a further 80 jobs will be opened by air transport communications and IT company SITA in Letterkenny in Co Donegal.
