City's Taste Of Spain

Spanish volunteers, Ana Garcia Alverez and Maria Diaz de Tuesta, help Belfast City Council gardener, Derek Follas, create the Willow Sculpture that forms part of the community and therapy garden at Musgrave Park. The two women are taking part in a European exchange for seniors aged over 50 between Belfast and Madrid. The ladies are leaving behind a memento of their six-week volunteer experience in Belfast after helping plant the living sculpture. Work on the garden at Musgrave Park was one element of their six-week programme, which included work in community centres, helping women and children, immigrants and disabled people.

Meningitis Feared

A university in England has confirmed that friends of an NI student are being offered antibiotics as a precaution after he died from suspected meningitis. Christopher McKee was studying sports journalism at Sunderland University when he took ill and died on March 26th. A university spokesperson said that everyone is deeply saddened by the death of such a bright student.

Guns Seized

Following an altercation and subsequent arrest, police in Banbridge, Co Down carried out a search in the Old Bleach Green area of the town which resulted in a number of firearms - including a rifle and a handgun - and blank rounds being recovered. The items were taken away for further forensic examination. A 23-year-old male was arrested for possession of firearms in suspicious circumstances and is currently helping police with their enquiries.

Bride's Stash Stolen

The PSNI in Limavady, Co Londonderry are appealing for the public's help in identifying the burglars who stole the wedding fund of a bride-to-be. Thieves broke into the home of the woman's parents, at Dromore Avenue, between 7pm and 11.30pm on Tuesday night and a large sum of money, which had been set aside for the wedding in just five weeks time, was stolen. Investigating officers have urged anyone who knows the identity of those involved to contact them, or to pass the information anonymously to Crimestoppers.

Military Buff Bailed

An ex soldier who is a collector of military memorabilia and a member of a living history group called The Rising Sons of Dixie that re-enacts American Civil War battles has been given bail on arms charges. Former Royal Irish Regiment soldier James Herron, 38, who served in the RIR for 15 years, appeared in Dungannon court on explosives and firearms offences. Officers from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch arrested him earlier this week in the Omagh area. He faces four charges including possessing an explosive and possessing a submachine gun, a magazine and a quantity of 9mm ammunition. Police said the charges are not connected to the investigation into Constable Ronan Kerr's murder.

Teenage Girl Struck By Brick At West Belfast Train Station
Police are appealing for information after a teenage girl was assaulted at a train station in west Belfast. The incident occurred at Dunmurry Halt between 10pm – 10.15pm on Saturday, 08 July. The victim was waiting for a train with her friend when an unknown person threw either a rock or a brick at her, striking her in the face.

No Public Inquiry Into Omagh Bombing
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP, has decided not to instigate a public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Real IRA bombing in Omagh on 15 August 1998.

Conference examines workplace bullying
The Labour Relations Agency has said that over 9,000 cases of bullying in the workplace are reported every year, as a joint conference with the Equality Commission gets underway in Belfast today. A new guide is being unveiled at the conference which it is hoped willl help address the problem.

Officers Arrested In Connection With Prescription Drugs Probe
Two police officers have been arrested as part of an investigation into a number of potential offences. The offences included theft and distribution of prescription drugs. The officers were detained by Police Ombudsman investigators on Thursday morning, 07 December. They were arrested at police stations in Co Antrim.
