SDLP name their candidates for Policing Board

The SDLP have named their candidates for nomination to the Policing Board, which has been designed to oversee the new Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The nationalist party, which agreed to take up its position on the board two weeks ago, remains, as of Thursday evening, the only party entitled to representation.

South Down MP Eddie McGrady, West Tyrone assembly member Joe Byrne and the party’s chairman and policing spokesman, Alex Attwood, have been nominated.

The 19 member policing board is to be made up of 10 seats divided between the UUP, DUP, SDLP and SF and the remaining nine to be made of independents.

The Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid has stated the parties have until midnight on Thursday 20 September to nominate their candidates to the Police Board.

Speaking on Thursday, the SDLP’s Alex Attwood said: “The urgent requirement is for proper policing now. The growing volume of opinion on this island and internationally is that the time and conditions are right to move forward on policing. The wider need to inject pace and potential into the political and policing processes means that all parties must act positively and act quickly to bring about the new beginning.”

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin have remained firm in their refusal to nominate to the policing board, and it is not yet clear whether the UUP and DUP will announce candidates to the Police Board before the midnight deadline. (AMcE)
