Army Bomb Squad Blast Suspect Object
There is a bomb alert underway today after a suspicious object was found in the car park of a supermarket in Ballynahinch, Co Down.
It was discovered behind Supervalu in the High Street area on Monday morning with the shop being closed while Army bomb squad officers carry out examinations.
Strangford DUP MLA Jonathan Bell stated this afternoon that he was deeply concerned at a device that was discovered today that has led to a controlled explosion being carried out.
Speaking after he held discussions with senior Police this morning Jonathan Bell stated: "The courage and professionalism of our police service and ATO [bomb squad] is to be commended.
"These professionals put themselves at risk for the safety of the entire community in Ballynahinch and elsewhere and merit our full gratitude.
"As I understand it this suspicious device was discovered by workmen undertaking some demolition work rightly referred it to the PSNI who in association with the ATO undertook a controlled explosion.
"I will keep in touch with the police as their investigation progresses as an assessment is made as to the exact nature of the viability of this device and I encourage anyone who can assist them with their investigation to do so," he said.
"From my discussions with the police I know their determination and commitment to protecting and maintaining our safety their selfless courage is very welcome and I encourage anyone who notices anything suspicious to liaise with them," he concluded.

The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a petrol bomb attack in Banbridge, in the early hours of Tuesday 19th March. It was reported that at around 2.10am on Tuesday morning, two petrol bombs were thrown at the back wall of a house in the Castlewellan Road area, causing scorch damage to the wall and a window frame.

Police are continuing to carry out searches in L'Derry after being informed that a suspicious device has been left in the city. The search, on the Madam's Bank Road, is resuming after being told an explosive device had been abandoned in the area. Residents and motorists are being urged to be vigilant.

The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
