Road users are being reminded that, traditionally, traffic levels increase in the autumn. Drivers visiting Belfast should be especially aware of the current road improvement works in the city centre.

With roads works ongoing as part of the Belfast on the Move initiative to provide increased priority for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists, motorists should allow additional travel time for journeys, particularly at peak times.

Bus lanes are now operational in Oxford Street and East Bridge Street and bus priority measures are being extended into May Street, Donegall Square South and Howard Street during September.

Road resurfacing will begin on May Street, Donegall Square South and Howard Street on Sunday 2 September and is expected to last for around two weeks. The work will be carried out at off peak times to reduce traffic disruption.

Following resurfacing and the provision of the appropriate signing, the bus lane will become operational, accommodating public transport, cyclists, motor cycles and permitted taxis from 7am to 7pm.

Electronic signing at key points will advise of the works and possible delays.

About 60% of traffic currently using the streets at the front and back of City Hall is through traffic with no destination within the city centre. Roads Service urges drivers who do not need to travel via the city centre to use alternative routes such as the M3, Westlink and the Outer Ring Road (A55.)
