NI Water Fined Over Pollution

Northern Ireland Water has been fined £500 for pollution.

The company was ordered to pay the fine, plus £28 of court charges, at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.

The fine follows an observation by a Water Quality Inspector On 31 March 2011 of a discharge from the storm water discharge point at Ballynahinch Wastewater Treatment Works.

A plume of sewage fungus was observed in the waterway for approximately 30 metres.

A sample taken confirmed the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life.

Man Escapes Crossbow Attack

A man has had a crossbow fired at him in his flat in Antrim town.

The incident occurred when two men wearing balaclavas forced their way into his flat at Elmdale at 21:00 yesterday evening.

The crossbow was fired, but missed the man, who then forced the attackers out of his flat.

The two men then escaped on foot.

Four Men Released After Shooting Arrest

Four men who were arrested over a shooting in Newry, County Down, in October have been released unconditionally.

During the paramilitary-style attack a 25-year-old man was shot in both legs in the Ardcarn Park area.

Two men aged 39, one aged 41 and one 49 were arrested yesterday but were later released.

Derry City FC Celebrate Homecoming

L’Derry has been celebrating Derry City FC’s FAI cup win with a celebration in the Guildhall Square.

Over 1,000 people are thought to have turned out to cheer home the team, following their 3-2 extra-time victory over St Patrick's Athletic at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Sunday.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín congratulated the team. She said: "I know that Derry City FC has faced many difficulties in recent years but this success, bringing with it the added bonus of a chance to compete in European competition, opens the door to a much needed and potentially brighter future for the club and its supporters.

"I hope Derry City FC can build on this and give the City fans even more to cheer next year and beyond."

Primark Donates £500,000 To Support Businesses Affected By Fire
Retailer Primark is donating £500,000 to Belfast City Council's City Recovery Investment Fund. The fund is being set up after a number of businesses have been severely affected by the fire at the Bank Buildings which happened over three weeks ago. A cordon remains in place and 14 firms have been closed for up to four months.

The Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel has challenged claims that the Council is not supporting St Patrick’s Day in Belfast. It follows a protest outside Belfast City Hall last week by the St Patrick's Carnival Committee who claim the Council isn't funding this year's event at the City Hall.

Four Men Arrested Over Explosive Device In West Belfast Released
Four men arrested in connection with an explosive device in west Belfast last year have been released from custody. The device was found in the Pantridge Road area on 30 October. Three men arrested under the Terrorism Act have been released unconditionally.

Co Fermanagh man suffers broken nose in robbery
A Co Fermanagh man has suffered a broken nose after being assaulted by two men at his home in Enniskillen. The 65-year-old man was confronted by two men who forced their way into his home on Sunday. They then assaulted him before robbing his home. It is understood that a sum of money was taken during the robbery.

Derry Council 'Dragging Heels' On Independent Traders' Ideas
Northern Irish traders have accused Derry City Council of "dragging its heels" in responding to a plan for regenerating the city centre. The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Traders Association (NIIRTA) presented the plan to the council in April.
