PSNI launch new community policing plan

Policing units working alongside District Policing Partnerships (DPPs) to tackle local policing needs have been launched today.

The PSNI's 29 District Command Unit (DCU) were launched by Assistant Chief Constable Roy Toner in Larne.

The units have been developed in consultation with local people, giving them a voice in how their local towns and villages are policed.

Among its tasks, the DCU's aim to:
  • work in partnership with other relevant agencies
  • help reduce the incidence of crime, including organised crime
  • maintain public order
  • work in partnership with others to reduce the number of people killed or injured in road accidents
  • disrupt drug activity
  • improve police effectiveness
Commenting on the DCU, Assistant Chief Constable Toner said: “The launch of 29 local policing plans today yet again signifies local officers and local people having greater influence on policing in their areas.

"The Police Service is accountable to the people of Northern Ireland and through their local policing plan, communities can measure the successes achieved by their local police service."

More than 200 people were appointed to District Policing Partnerships in March this year, following an extensive public recruitment campaign.

The partnerships aim to give the community a say in policing in the province.
