Laure Prouvost Wins Turner Prize

French-born artist Laure Prouvost has won the Turner Prize 2013 in L'Derry.

Mme Prouvost was announced as the winner at an awards ceremony at Ebrington Barracks by Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan.

The holding of the competition in L'Derry, during its year as UK City Of Culture, marks the first time it has been held outside of England

The London-based artist won the prize for her video installation, Wantee.

She told the audience: "I'm not ready! I didn't expect to win this at all."

Mme Prouvost is the third non-British winner of the Turner Prize, since it was established in 1984.

The Prize is awarded to a contemporary artist under 50 who is living, working or born in Britain.

Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: "I would like to congratulate Laure Prouvost. Short films and video installations have intrigued many and promoted discussion around this art form. The intimate space created as part of her exhibition in Buildings 80 and 81 demonstrates how the arts can transform our relationship with spaces and help us imagine ambitious changes for Derry’s iconic buildings such as the Shirt Factories in the future.

"The Turner Prize has been one of the highlights of the City of Culture 2013, shining a spotlight on the city and home grown visual arts exhibitions and initiatives. While high profile events such as these put Derry on the world stage, there are also benefits at community level. It’s fitting the exhibition has been held in a former military barracks, an area once closed off, now an open shared space attracting local and international visitors. This demonstrates the new confidence, openness and vibrancy of this city.

"City of Culture 2013 has been about bringing real economic benefits and skills to Derry and the wider region. Again there are obvious benefits to the hospitality sector with increased hotel occupancy. All of the exhibition invigilators, volunteers and security staff for the Turner exhibition were recruited locally. Additionally powerful cultural relationships have been built by the creative industries and artists here, which will prove beneficial for years to come."

The exhibition will continue in L'Derry until 5 January.
