Man Fends Off Robbers, West Belfast

The would-be victim of an armed robbery in west Belfast has fought off his attackers after they attempted to steal money from him.

Two men armed with a knife and a hatchet approached a customer outside a bank in the west of the city, but left empty handed after the man fought them off.

He was approached by the pair outside the premises on Andersonstown Road on Monday at 09:00.

A struggle occurred and the men left empty-handed in a grey car.

The man carrying the knife was described as being around 5ft 5in tall, of slim build and wearing a camouflage jacket with hood and a black scarf over his face.

The second is described as being about 5ft 11in and carrying a hatchet.

Woman Convicted Of £3,000 Benefit Fraud

A woman has been convicted at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court for claiming benefits she was not entitled to.

24-year-old Emma Curran of Struell Close, Downpatrick claimed Income Support totalling £2,929 while failing to declare employment. She was fined £250, ordered to pay an offender levy of £15 and court costs of £32.

She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency

Arrests Follow Banbridge Drug Raid

Police have arrested two people following a raid on a house in Banbridge, County Down.

It is thought that an estimated £8,000 worth of cannabis was seized.

A 24-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man have were detained at Hillhead Gardens on Friday for possession of Class B drugs, possession of Class B drugs with intent to supply and being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs.

The man has now been released unconditionally while the woman was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Lit Aerosol Causes Belfast Explosion

A small explosion that was heard in Belfast city centre on Monday night was caused by a can of aerosol being set alight, police have said.

Officers were called to the Chichester Street and Victoria Street areas near city hall at about 00:20 and the area was cordoned off.

Man arrested in connection with Lisa murder is released
The man arrested in connection with the murder of Bangor woman Lisa Dorrian has been released, police have said. The 18-year-old man was detained in the Greater Belfast area on Tuesday but has since been released without charge. The man is the fourth person to be questioned in connection with inquiries into the 25-year-old’s killing.

Man Arrested In Connection With Dromara Assault
A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a report of an assault at licenced premises at the Rathfriland Road area of Dromara. Detective Inspector Bell said: "Shortly before 10:10pm on Friday 15th December, it was reported that an altercation occurred at a bar in the area following three men refused entry to the premises.

Man Dies In Portadown Road Crash
An 18-year-old man has died following a collision in Portadown. The crash happened on the Dungannon Road between midnight and 12.30am on Wednesday, 08 November. The road has been re-opened. Elsewhere, a man, aged in his 30's, has died in a road collision in Co Antrim.

Man Released On Bail Over Lurgan Murder
A man arrested in connection with a murder in Lurgan on Sunday, 06 August, has been released on bail pending further enquiries. The body of a man, aged 45, was discovered at a flat on Victoria Street. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Man Shot In County Down
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack in County Down. The man was getting out of his car at the Quays in Killyleagh at about 1.00am on Wednesday morning when a man approached him and shot him. The man is recovering in hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
