Prison officer's home damaged in bomb attack

A bomb has partially exploded outside the house of a former prison officer today.

The explosion, which caused minor damage to the front door of the man's house in New Road, Donaghadee, is the latest in a long line of attacks on officer's homes.

The remains of the device are being examined by forensic experts.

Meanwhile, five men are due in court today charged with membership of an illegal organisation.

The men are to appear before Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday each accused of being members of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), having items likely to be of use to terrorists and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

The charges are believed to relate to an incident in Randalstown on Monday.
