BCC Scoops Recycling Award

Belfast City Council (BCC) has scooped a prestigious award in recognition of its Zero Waste Action Plan (ZWAP) 2012 - 15.

The council won the Local Authority Recycling Initiative Award for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management at a ceremony in London.

ZWAP boosted Belfast's recycling rate by 12 per cent over three years and the recycling rate in Northern Ireland during the same period increased by three per cent while in the UK it increased by four per cent.

Councillor Julie-Anne Corr-Johnston, Chair of the People and Communities Committee, said: "This is great news and we have to thank Belfast residents for taking part so enthusiastically in our recycling initiatives.

"However, we still need to do more to reach our goal of 50 per cent recycling by 2020.

"Recent work showed 20-25% of the waste in general waste bins is food. If everyone recycled this using their food waste collections at home, it would make a major contribution towards meeting our recycling target.

"Not only is recycling good for the environment but every one per cent additional recycling at the kerbside saves around £100,000 which can be reinvested in the city."
