NI Supporter Dies In France

A Northern Ireland supporter has died in Nice, French police have confirmed.

Darren Rodgers, 24, from Ballymena, fell from a promenade onto a rocky beach.

Supt Nigel Goddard, who is heading up the PSNI team in France, said the death appears to have been an accident.

NI Captain Steven Davis tweeted: "So sad to wake up to the tragic news that a Northern Ireland fan has died in Nice, thoughts with his family and friends."

French police believe he had been drinking and went over the barrier.

Alliance Leader David Ford MLA expressed his condolences.

He said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of Darren Rodgers in Nice.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends as they come to terms with their loss.

"This will have also been a shock for all those fans waking up in Nice today, casting a sad shadow over what has been a positive experience so far."

First Minister, Arlene Foster and deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, said: "It was with great shock and sadness we learned this morning of the death of Darren Rodgers in Nice last night as the result of a tragic accident. The loss of a young life in these circumstances is truly heart breaking and our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this extremely difficult time.

"This sad news is in stark contrast to the jovial carnival atmosphere just hours before at the game against Poland. Our fans have been fine ambassadors for the place we all call home and we encourage everyone to keep safe."
