Sinn Fein Claim IRA Were A 'Main Protagonist' In the Troubles
Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly has claimed that the IRA was one of the "main protagonists" in the Northern Ireland conflict.
It comes after the party faced criticism for alleging that the British Government had been the "main protagonist" in a submission to the public consultation on how to deal with the legacy of the Troubles.
The initial Sinn Fein paper claimed that the British Government has "always sought to conceal, deny and cover up" it's role in the conflict.
The claims were scrutinised by many, and Sinn Finn MLA Gerry Kelly has today admitted a poor choice of words.
"It is reasonable for me and for republicans to say the British were the main protagonists," he said.
"But I am also accepting that unionists, political unionism or British soldiers or whoever wants to say that the IRA were the main protagonist…I have no difficulty with that because the IRA were a main protagonist."

The next opportunity to see him perform in Belfast will be on June 22 2019 at Ormeau Park.
Further Arrest In Dissident Republican Probe
A third man has been arrested under the Terrorism Act as part of probe into dissident republican activity.
The 44-year-old's arrest follows two earlier arrests when men aged 39 and 43 were detained by police and a number of properties were searched in Belfast overnight on and on Thursday.
All three are being questioned at Musgrave Police Station.
