Larne Main Street To Get Pop-Up Park Transformation
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has confirmed his department's commitment to a £171,050 project that will see an empty plot on Larne Main Street transformed into a vibrant pop-up park for community use.
The initiative, led by Mid & East Antrim Borough Council, will open up the former Cellars site, turning an overgrown, vacant area into a welcoming community garden.
The project, which has secured £154,000 in funding from the Department for Communities, will also include the creation of a new footpath connecting Main Street with Point Street, along with colourful street art and various animation activities. Mid & East Antrim Borough Council has secured a lease for the site for up to four years, pending future permanent development by the site owner. Minister Lyons commented: "I am pleased that my department has been able to provide £154,000 of funding towards this project. This initiative will transform an area that is currently inaccessible, unused and unattractive, bringing it into use to provide a welcoming area for people to sit, socialise and interact. It will bring a pleasant green space into the heart of the Main Street. Our traders face many challenges, and I am happy to support schemes, such as this, which bring forward fresh ideas for encouraging people to visit and spend time in our town centres."
To ensure the final design of the garden reflects local needs, stakeholder engagement, including with community groups, is planned for the summer. Construction is anticipated to commence in the Autumn, with completion targeted for Spring 2026.

Searches As ATM Thieves Chased Across Border
The PSNI is conducting searches after thieves travelling with an ATM stolen from Co Louth travelled across the border this morning. The culprits were intercepted on Dunleer Main Street at around 4.30am this morning, Wednesday 15 January, by patrolling members of the Garda Armed Support unit.

Strabane Warehouse Blaze Deliberate
A fire in County Tyrone which led to the evacuation of properties is being treated as arson. Homes and a neighbouring supermarket had to be evacuated last night during a malicious blaze in Strabane. The building, on Lower Main Street, was completely destroyed.

Main Street In Greyabbey Closed Following House Fire
The main Street in Greyabbey, Co Down, has closed due to a house fire. Fire crews are currently at the scene of the blaze. Diversions have been put in place and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

Police Investigating After Brick Thrown At Car
Police are investigating a report of criminal damage after a brick was thrown through the rear passenger window of a car in the Main Street area of Cullybackey on Sunday afternoon, 5th January. The incident occurred at approximately 4.45pm near a building site. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Fatal Building Site Accident Probed
Falling bricks have killed a 61-year-old man on a building site in Co Tyrone. The incident happened at a house under construction on a building site in Main Street in Fintona, County Tyrone shortly after 9am on Friday. Emergency services treated the man at the scene but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
