Downpatrick Residents Escape Injury In Arson Attempt

Police in Downpatrick are appealing for information following a serious reported arson incident in the early hours of Saturday, 25 October 2025.

Detective Sergeant Emerson reported that at around 3.45am, police received a call that two males had approached a house in the Struell Avenue area of the town. The males poured petrol over the property's front door and a car parked outside, and made an attempt to set both on fire before leaving the scene in a vehicle.

A short time later, police received a second report of a car on fire in the Saul Road area. This vehicle is believed to have been the one the suspects used to flee the initial scene.

Detective Sergeant Emerson stressed the severe danger posed by the attack: "Luckily, the fire had not spread and was extinguished by the resident of the property relatively quickly. However, there were a number of children and adults asleep in the property at the time this happened and it is very fortunate nobody was injured."

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have video footage—such as ring doorbell or other CCTV footage—that could be relevant to the investigation, to contact them on 101 quoting reference 204 of 25/10/25.
