Man Charged After Police Officer Sustains Serious Hand Injury

A man has been charged to court after a police officer sustained a serious hand injury while on duty in Derry/Londonderry on Saturday night, 29 November 2025.

Chief Inspector Craig confirmed that officers had responded to a call for service in the Galliagh Park area shortly before 11pm, which resulted in the arrest of an aggressive male. While the suspect was being taken to custody, he kicked the officer's hand, pinning it against the vehicle door. The officer required immediate hospital treatment and was unable to remain on duty.

The 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences. Following further investigation, he has been charged with multiple offences, including: obstructing police; resisting police; disorderly behaviour; common assault; criminal damage; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; and non-fatal strangulation or asphyxiation.

The man is due to appear before Londonderry Magistrates' Court this morning, Monday, 1 December 2025. As is standard procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Chief Inspector Craig stated that such attacks should never be accepted as 'part of the job': "Police officers come to work knowing that it's a tough calling but they should expect to be able to do their jobs without fear of attack."
