Man Arrested In Newry Over Threats To Elected Representatives
Detectives from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch have arrested a 46-year-old man in Newry as part of an ongoing investigation into threats directed at local politicians.
The arrest took place on Tuesday, 13 January, following a series of searches conducted in the area.
The individual was detained under the Terrorism Act and is currently in police custody assisting officers with their enquiries. The investigation focuses specifically on reports of threats made against elected representatives within the Newry, Mourne and Down district.
The operation involved a coordinated effort between the Serious Crime Branch and local policing teams to address intimidation aimed at public officials.
Detective Chief Inspector Bradley stated: "The man, aged 46, was arrested under the Terrorism Act. The searches and subsequent arrest forms part of an investigation into reports of threats made to elected representatives in Newry, Mourne and Down. The arrested man remains in police custody at this time, assisting with enquiries."
The PSNI has reiterated its commitment to protecting those in public office and ensuring that democratic representatives can carry out their duties without fear of violence or harassment.
