Sinn Féin MLA Slams Westminster Over 'Contempt' For Local Communities

Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has accused Westminster of demonstrating "contempt" for the requirements of communities across the north.

The comments from the party's communities spokesperson come in anticipation of a 64% reduction in funding for community and voluntary organisations by the British government, which is due to be implemented this Wednesday, 1 April.

Mr Gildernew suggested the move was evidence of a failed Brexit agenda and highlighted that decisions made in Westminster lack relevance to the actual circumstances faced by people in Ireland. He noted that despite a united front from local parties in opposition to the measures, the British government is continuing with the cuts.

According to the MLA, the reduction in financial support will lead to the loss of jobs and a decrease in available services, creating significant challenges for the most vulnerable members of society.

Colm Gildernew said: "This is yet further proof of the failed Brexit agenda and decisions being taken in Westminster which have no relevance or grounding in the realities faced by people in Ireland. The disdain and contempt shown by the British government in recent months towards our hardworking community and voluntary organisations is a disgrace.

"Despite local parties standing united in total opposition to these cuts, the British government is pressing ahead, ignoring the wishes of all those who will be impacted. These cuts will result in job losses, a reduction in services and will have serious ramifications for our most vulnerable. We need to work together to take control of our own future where all decisions are made here at home in the best interests of workers, families and communities on this island."
