Lord Mayor Joins Safer Neighbourhood Officers On Belfast City Centre Patrol

Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly joined Belfast City Council’s Safer Neighbourhood Officers on a walkabout in the city centre as preparations intensify for a packed summer of events.

The Lord Mayor accompanied the team on a routine route through Belfast city centre, hearing how the council works closely with the PSNI, statutory bodies and voluntary partners — including Extern, the Welcome Organisation and SOS NI — as well as Business Improvement Districts, to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for residents, workers and visitors.

With cruise ship arrivals, concerts and citywide events scheduled over the coming weeks, officers outlined how their visible presence reassures shoppers and businesses while also providing targeted support to vulnerable people.

The council currently deploys ten Safer Neighbourhood Officers, operating varied shift patterns across the city centre and neighbourhood parks, and supporting major gatherings such as Belsonic.

Their responsibilities include challenging anti-social behaviour, responding to queries and concerns from residents and traders, and signposting individuals experiencing homelessness or addiction to appropriate services.

An enhanced, co-ordinated operation is planned for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, taking place from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 August, when visitor numbers are expected to rise. Regular foot patrols will continue throughout the pedestrianised event zone, with officers on hand to assist attendees and to keep supporting the city's most vulnerable where needed.

"The walkaround highlighted a wide range of issues facing our city centre, but it was also very reassuring," said Councillor Donnelly.

"Our Safer Neighbourhood Officers are really invested in their jobs and in making a difference to the city. That shines through when they talk about their work and you see the relationships they have developed with our city partners and our residents.

"The council works alongside our statutory partners with responsibility for housing, healthcare or policing, and we recognise the role we can play in working with others to make our city centre feel safe and welcoming for everyone, while supporting our most vulnerable citizens too.

"With their assistance, many people who have faced challenging circumstances are now receiving support through the Complex Lives initiative, with agencies working together collaboratively to wrap around vulnerable individuals and help them with every step of their journey.

"With a busy summer ahead, the work of this Safer Neighbourhood team, and our city partners, is really valuable in fostering that sense of welcome and in providing a safe experience, so my thanks to them for their dedication and commitment."
